How easy it is to make plum jam

Our neighbor had an over supply of plums this august from their backyard trees. We gladly took on several grocery bags of these delicious little plums. We could only eat so many fresh, so I decided to make some jam. This procedure will make four pints of plum jam. Multiply ingredients and jars accordingly to make more or less jam.
You will need:
  • five cups (1225 grams) of chopped plums of any type.
  • five cups (877 grams)  of granulated sugar
  • a food chopper or food processer
  • four pint canning jars, with lids and rings
  • a dutch oven or other kettle
  • A large pot to sterilize and prepare the jars
  • a rack of some kind to set the jars on
  • a funnel to fill the jars
The materials and ingredients assembled

1)  Put four pint jars in a large kettle. Put them on top of a something to keep them from bouncing around the the bottom of the pot. There is a commercial jar holder available but I improvised with two pegboard screwdriver holders. Heat with lids and rings too until they start to boil and then turn off and let them sit.

2) Used a food chopper to chop, plums. Result was four cups.
This food processor did and excellent job, skins and all

3) Added 5 ¾  cups of  sugar to the four cups of chopped plums. Recipe called for eight cups. I believe it will lead to runny jam.
4) Put sugar and plums in a dutch oven and cook for 5 minutes.

Five minutes is all it takes

5) Pour into hot pint  jars with a funnel. Work and trapped air out by pushing jam outward with a spatula.

6) Screw the lids on finger tip tight.  It made 3 plus pints. The leftovers fit into a small glass storage jar. The sample tasted good.

The three sealed up with a pop within about 30 minutes as they cooled. Crank the lids a little tighter now.
It's January 2014 and we're finishing off our second pint. It's still tastes great. The last of the jam was used on January 18, 2015 and still tasted great!

Been using for years                                  Rated as a very good buy
